Sabina Schumpf, The Basler Registrar

HI! I'M SABINA.

I'm a freelance registrar based in Basel, Switzerland.

Ever since the beginning of my professional path in the creative industry both in Switzerland and London over ten years ago, I have set my focus and passion on the logistics of art: inventory and storage management, national and international shipments, punctual organisation of art fairs and exhibitions.

Resourceful and pragmatic, I always think three steps ahead and go the extra mile to make "things happen" within the given deadline and budget. I feel comfortable working behind the scenes - be it from an office, a dusty storage unit, an art fair booth or the cargo area at the airport.

I have a proven track record of managing high-value art collections and exhibitions, as well as delivering thousands of dollars in savings to clients after efficiently reorganising their storage facilities and insurance policies.

Over the past few years I have been approached countless times by art students, junior registrars and fellow professionals, interested in my working procedures, templates and tools I use daily in my job. So the idea was born to transform this website in a platform for sharing knowledge from registrar to registrar.

I have a Master’s degree in Art Market from Kingston University in London and a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of Zurich. I communicate fluently in Italian, English and German, and have a basic knowledge of French.

PORTFOLIO

Here below you can find a selection of public projects I have executed in recent years for museums and other institutions. Please understand that for confidentiality reasons I will never disclose any task performed for private clients.

TIBA-Art Management Course-June2022.png

THE INTERNATIONAL BUTLER ACADEMY, NE-SIMPELVELD,

JUN 2022

In Spring 2022 the award-winning International Butler Academy invited me to teach its students a crash course in art management.

For them I created a 6-hour intensive course in two modules. In a first theoretical module, they learned about art collecting, the value of art and the art market. In the second module, they had the chance to train more practical aspects, such as recognising damages to artworks, writing condition reports and the implications of safely handling and shipping artworks.

CLEANING & REGISTRATION PROJECT

Between October 2020 and March 2022, in a large team of conservators, art historians and art handlers, I helped the Stiftung für Kunst, Kultur und Geschichte (SKKG) clean, register, pack and store its collection. Overall, we registered over 160'000 paintings, sculptures, textiles, historical and cultural artefacts.
